The Bill Jeffrey Award

About the Bill Jeffrey Award
The Bill Jeffrey Award is named in honor of the legendary Penn State coach who served as United Soccer Coaches president in 1948 and received the United Soccer Coaches Honor Award in 1949. It is presented annually for outstanding service to or achievement in intercollegiate soccer.
The individual’ s contribution must have made a positive impact on the improvement, advancement or presentation of intercollegiate soccer. Selection is made by the Jeffrey Committee after screening of all nominations from member institutions. To nominate, submit the Bill Jeffrey Award form, along with a supporting one-page narrative and other supporting materials as outlined on the form.
Past recipients of the Bill Jeffrey Award are:
1972 Wayne Sunderland, Pratt Institute( N. Y.) for establishing and organizing the Senior Bowl of soccer.
1973 Dettmar Cramer, USSF Coach and Clinician, Germany for establishing and organizing the USSF Clinics and Coaching License schools.
1974 John McKeon, East Stroudsburg State College( Pa.) for establishing the USSF publication Soccer Monthly.
1975 No award given.
1976 Don Yonker, Drexel University( Pa.) for his work with United Soccer Coaches’ publication Soccer Journal.
1977 Frank Longo, Quincy College( Ill.) for his work with Partners of the American in International Exchanges of college teams and coaches.
1978 Bill Schelleberger, Lynchburg College( Va.) for setting a benchmark in coaching excellence( 261 wins) in college soccer.
1979 Dr. Patrick Damore, SUNY Fredonia for his work in developing the ISAA national rating system.
1980 No award given.
1981 Walter Chyzowych, USSF; for his work in the development and direction of the USSF National Coaching Schools.
1982 No award given.
1983 Dr. Owen Wright and Patricia Wright, Elizabethtown College( Pa.) for their work with national ratings and the development of the first national rating system for women.
1984 Mickey Cochrane, Bowling Green State University( Ohio) for his contribution to the preservation of soccer history, records and memorabilia.
1985 Dr. Raymond Bernabei, NISOA( Pa.) for his work as executive director of the National Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association and for his development of the Academy Summer Camp Program / Assessment Program for college officials.
1986 Dr. Greg Myers, U. S. Naval Academy( Md.) for his work with the ISAA, NISOA and collegiate soccer as the chairman of the Ethics Committee.
1987 Jerry Yeagley, Indiana University for his work as a teacher of coaches and administrative skills for United Soccer Coaches, the NCAA, and ISAA.
1988 Fred Schmalz, University of Evansville( Ind.) for his work in developing the ISAA Guide Book.
1989 Albert Colone, Oneonta Soccer Hall of Fame( N. Y.) for his development of a Hall of Fame for college soccer as part of the National Soccer Hall of Fame— the Collegiate Wing.
1990 Hank Steinbrecher, USSF for his longtime service to intercollegiate soccer.
1991 Joseph Morrone, University of Connecticut for his continued work on soccer legislative committees and his assistance in changing legislation through the NCAA.
1992 Steve Veal, NAIA Soccer for his longtime dedication to the sport of soccer as a member of the NAIA national office staff.
1993 Charlie Slagle, Davidson College( N. C.) or his continued efforts related to the progression of the championship tournament.
1994 Tim Schum, Binghamton University( N. Y.) for his tireless efforts as editor of United Soccer Coaches’ Soccer Journal.
1995 John MacKenzie, Western Illinois University for his longtime dedication and service to the ISAA and intercollegiate soccer.
1996 Theodore H. Barclay, Denison University( Ohio) for his numerous years as a teacher and coach at Denison.
1997 Mel Lorback, West Chester University( Pa.) for his involvement with the game at all levels as coach, educator and administrator.
1998 Marvin Zuidema, Calvin College( Mich.) for his development and implementation of the United Soccer Coaches Ethics Award and his role in the MIAA.
1999 Peter Gooding, Amherst College( Mass.) for his involvement with the game at all levels and his work with the advancement of the United Soccer Coaches Coaching Academy.
