NISOA Policy Statements
Coaches / Institutions Grievances Against a Referee
Purpose To define and standardize steps to be taken when a coach or institution has a grievance against a NISOA referee due to some unprofessional action by that referee that causes injury, hardship or a feeling of dissatisfaction to a player, coach or institution.
Policy It shall be the privilege of any coach or institution to file a grievance against any NISOA referee where there exists an unresolved problem affecting the relationship between the referee and the coach or institution. This grievance will request the governing board of the NISOA to assist in researching the problem. The filing of a grievance is a final step to be taken only when all attempts have failed.
Procedures The following are steps to be taken in resolving a problem between a referee of the NISOA Local Chapter and a coach or institution. The problem may be resolved during any of these steps, thus ending a need for any further action.
Step 1- By letter, the coach is to contact the representative( s) of the referee’ s Local Chapter in an attempt to resolve the problem.
Step 2- By letter, the Athletic Director should contact the representative( s) of the Local Chapter in an attempt to resolve the problem.
Step 3- A letter containing detailed information concerning the grievance is to be sent by the coach or Athletic Director to the NISOA Regional Representative responsible for the region in which in the involved school is located. A copy of this letter is to be sent to the representative( s) of the Local NISOA Chapter. The NISOA Regional Representative will contact the Athletic Director and / or coach of the institution to discuss and attempt to resolve the problem.
Step 4- The grievance will be referred to the NISOA Ethics and Grievance Committee chairman, who, in cooperation with the chairman of the NSCAA Ethics Committee, will contact the involved institution and chapter to discuss and resolve the problem.
Step 5- The grievance will be referred to the NISOA Executive Director, who will take all steps necessary to resolve the problem and will have final jurisdiction. The referee, if charged, shall have the privilege of appeal by presenting his / her case before the entire NISOA Executive Board.
Referee Grievances Against Coaches / Institutions

Policy It shall be the privilege of any NISOA Local Chapter to file a grievance against any institution where there exists an unresolved problem affecting the relationship between the Local Chapter and the institution.
