UNITED SOCCER COACHES 2022 MISSOURI ATHLETIC CLUB ’ S HERMANN TROPHY
In 2003 , the protocol for the selection and announcement of the winners of the Missouri Athletic Club ’ s Hermann Trophy underwent modifications designed to bring greater attention to college soccer ’ s most prestigious individual award . Now a “ watch list ” is published in August , with 15 semifinalists named in November . From that list , three finalists are identified in early December , with the winners announced during a news conference and presentation dinner at the Missouri Athletic Club in early January .
Michelle Cooper , Duke University Sophomore Forward Clarkston , Mich .
Cooper turned in the best overall season in NCAA Division I soccer in 2022 with 49 points , 19 goals and 11 assists . She was the only player in the nation to rank in the top 10 in all three categories . In the NCAA stats , Cooper ranked second in points ( 49 ), tied for second in goals ( 19 ) and tied for ninth in assists ( 11 ). She was one of only two players in the country to collect 10 or more goals and assists this season .
Duncan McGuire , Creighton University Junior Forward Omaha , Neb .
The NCAA leader in goals and points , McGuire set the Bluejay single season record with 23 goals and closed the season with 50 points . His final tally of 2022 knotted Creighton ’ s College Cup match at 1-1 with eventual NCAA champion Syracuse .
Women ’ s Finalists
Korbin Albert University of Notre Dame Sophomore Midfielder Grayslake , Ill . Albert scored a career-high 16 goals ( ranked 8th in the country ), a career-best 37 points ( ranked 9th in the country ), six game-winners ( ranked 5th in the nation ) and doing all of that in the nation ’ s top-rated conference . Albert was sensational down the stretch , scoring 14 goals over the last 12 games . In fact , her 16 total goals were the most from a midfielder this past season .
Jenna Nighswonger Florida State University Senior Midfielder Huntington Beach , Fla . Nighswonger had a career-high in points ( 28 ), assists ( 16 ) and goals ( six ) and was named a United Soccer Coaches First Team All-American . Her 16 assists in a season were second in school history behind only Mami Yamaguchi in the 2007 season when she won the MAC Hermann . Nighswonger finished her career with 19 goals and 34 assists for 72 points . Her 34 assists rank as the second most in a career at FSU and her 72 points ranks ninth all-time at Florida State .
Men ’ s Finalists
Levonte Johnson Syracuse University Senior Forward Brampton , Ont . Johnson was a pivotal attacking threat for the Orange on their way to the program ’ s first ever NCAA National Championship , sending Syracuse to the NCAA College Cup Final with an 86th minute winner against Creighton in a 3-2 win . The senior forward scored 11 goals , tallied six assists , and registered 28 points this season . Johnson finished second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in points and goals , along with scoring a national leading eight match-winning goals
Peter Stroud Duke University Junior Midfielder Chester , N . J . Stroud , the top player in the country in both of TopDrawerSoccer ’ s preseason and midseason Top 100 , provided a steady presence in Duke ’ s midfield all season long . He finished the 2022 season tied for second-most points on the team and setting a new career-high for assists in a regular season with five . The Chester , N . J ., native was named All-America First Team and became the first player in ACC history to win back-to-back ACC Midfield of the Year honors while also being named First Team All-ACC and All-South Region First Team for the second consecutive season .
